Did anyone ask for a cup of jazz reinvented? Louis Sclavis is the man and I present to you his latest album on the famous ECM label. The man has worked with jazz in a wide variety of contexts from combining it with French folk music (he happened to be the first one to do so) to free jazz. This particular very fresh album of jazz has grown to be one of my absolute favorites in the genre, at least from our time.

Louis Sclavis is a symbol for European jazz. This album is very thematic, creates distinct moods and atmospheres, reminding me of a variety of films. It manages to loosen up for more free improvisational chapters without losing the feel of it all. Sclavis is renowned for bringing in elements of other genres in his jazz, sometimes Lost On The Way sounds like modern classical through the composition or rock or funk through the electric bass or guitar.

Here I am, promoting another great album by my good friend. Some of you might've checked out his previous alum "Lust Year" which I posted earlier this year, depending on whether you liked that or were horribly disgusted (perhaps both) you might want to give this a try.

Whitewater Orgasm once again surprises us with some of the most offensive and extreme soundscapes of harsh noise. While I at first listen was hoping for more than just a couple of tracks from the first movie. I remember the OST in the first movie being very memorable and somehow some years later I stumbled upon this and just had to check it out. I was slightly disappointed upon listening, most of the tracks are from the second movie, which is unfortunately not nearly as enchanting .

Tetsuo I is a great movie I'll recommend to anyone with an interest in awesome old school effects in a cyberpunkish aesthetic. If you haven't seen it already of course. Check out the awesome trailer on youtube.

Tetsuo I-II OST is still fairly decent if you can live with how cheesy it is at times. It's built around various percussion including metal percussion complemented with synths.

Astrid Monroe & Genesis P-Orridge - When I Was Young (2004) [V0]

Subtle, somewhat minimal trip-hop creates a stripped down atmosphere through repetitive drums, melodies and basslines. With Genesis' manipulated words echoing throughout the pieces. Although seemingly unspectacular, I quite fancy the eeriness that is prevalent throughout the record. I can't seem to help cycling back to this. I don't know how much creative input Genesis had in this but it seems to me to mostly be Astrid Monroe.

Boris - Smile Live At Wolf Creek (2008) [V2]

Status report: This place isn't dead just yet. I've been occupied with work. I was without a computer a while etc. A lot of different reasons contributed really. I haven't had as much time on my hands to find music, much less make posts about it here.

Since Pink and onward we've been tought to be skeptical of new Boris releases. As this came out after Smile (which wasn't bad, but not that great either) my hopes weren't too high. Listening to CD1 it's pretty much what I'd expect from such pink-ish tracks, it sounded similar to what I heard when I saw them live during the Smile tour, some nice high-pace moments but often annoying with Atsuo's outbursts of "wooh"s and "yeah"s.

The last 50 minutes of CD2 however (beginning with No Ones Grieve), was something completely different, it blew me away, I haven't heard such fabulous droning and noising from Boris in years. Sure, it should've been expected seeing as the last 3 tracks are the ones that make the studio version worthwhile as well. With this I think the Smile Live album actually outdoes both the Southern Lord studio and the Diwphalanx studio Smile, yet it's still remarkably unappreciated in comparison, which is why I wanted to post it here. Worth getting for CD2.

Lust Year is the most recent solo release by Santeri who runs Instrument Normal with me. In this album he delves into the abyss of harsh noise, ranging from wallnoise to ear piercing isolated feedback to delicious angsty screams. But it also delves into some ambient, sometimes buried under the noise, sometimes entirely by itself. This really is one of the most harsh creations I've ever heard and I'd recommend it to anyone who'd like such a thing.

Hey. Some of you might already be familiar with this project, it's a project I run together with a Finnish friend of mine where we delve into the universe of noise, dark ambient and other forms of fucked up soundscapes and sonic experimentations. This was officially released last year somewhere in September, thought I'd eventually post it here as well.

I don't feel like talking too much about it since I feel as if I have to "whore myself out" in order to instill interest, but nonetheless.

Being completely instrumental it is a album that holds different meaning to both me and Santeri, I believe it could hold a meaning to you as well, therefore I don't want to spoil your own process of discovering this audial experience. However if you're interested, some of our thoughts concerning the piece are included in a .txt file.

"Following the emergence of differences within the GRMC Pierre Henry, Philippe Arthuys, and several of their colleagues, resigned in April 1958. Schaeffer created a new collective, called Groupe de Recherches Musicales (GRM) and set about recruiting new members including Luc Ferrari, François-Bernard Mâche, Iannis Xenakis, Bernard Parmegiani, and Mireille Chamass-Kyrou. Later arrived Ivo Malec, Philippe Carson, Romuald Vandelle, Edgardo Canton and Francois Bayle"

This release features a couple of very obscure composers that still measure up, as well as some more known such as Iannis Xenakis and Pierre Schaeffer. Being released 1960, classics like these still far outdo most dark ambient / other modern music made with today's technology in terms of pure atmosphere.

Boris - Japanese Heavy Rock Hits Vol. 4 [7"] (2009) [24.96FLAC/FLAC/V0]

Here it is, surprise. Unlike the others this is just one song. Despite being very pop-rockish, mellowing out towards the end, it's actually quite listenable, nothing I'd keep on repeat for too long though. Wata shares her very average singing voice, sorry, she's a great guitarist but I really don't see why so many of the Boris fans want her to do more vocals.

At first I thought this whole 7" series was quite ridiculous, it seemed more like a folly to print expensive exclusive releases without actually much content. Now, I'm actually quite glad they didn't make an album out of these, it would've been a horrible album. Being a series of 7" singles it never really aroused much anticipation or expectation and is therefore a great excuse for being less than stellar. I understand that sometimes you just want to release material without having that perfectionist burden hanging over your shoulders, at least that's how I'd feel. I wouldn't pay 100$ for this on ebay myself, am I really that bad for wanting to listen to it anyway? Perhaps I am.

BUMP: I'm whoring out to your wishes and am posting FLACs for your enjoyment. Made it quite a few days ago actually, however I had internet issues and I've been busy so I haven't found an opportunity to post it until now.

More post-rock than the previous two volumes. I enjoyed this one more than the horrible vol.2 but this is still nothing fantastic. I was however requested to post the links to all volumes. After being threatened to a lawsuit by southern lord I feel all the more tempted.

Krister Linder - Metropia (2009) [FLAC/V0]

Saw the premiere screening of this movie at Stockholm film festival, where they gave me the soundtrack as a gift. Thought I'd share it as an universal recommendation, not just music-wise. The soundtrack is ambient, sometimes venturing into darker moods, sometimes a little too cheesy for my taste, it's catchy though. Script/story-wise this movie is nothing fantastic, rather hollywoodian. The main enjoyable factor in this movie is the visual atmosphere it creates through it's innovative 2-d animation, how it depicts the bleak dystopian not-so-far-future world. Check it out.

Still, former Dälek member's solo album Remains. Still is mostly associated with earlier Dälek days when they embraced a much darker sound, most prominently heard on "Absence". Remains is a album of harsh, dark soundscapes. In a way it's very much what you'd expect from a solo album from Stills, kind of like Absence without the creative influence of the other members, isolated.

The first track of Vol. 2 is actually quite appalling, it tries very hard to become avant-garde or ironic or something and it just turns out to be as bad as it actually is.

Second track doesn't try very hard to be better, but it's a much more subtle experience and a much stronger one as well.

Overall I found it very disappointing, but the second track is listenable. I never really had much expectation on this series at all, but vol.1 at least came off as very catchy. After reading the comments on the first volume, I'm sure there are plenty of you that want to hear this for yourselves though, so here it is.

Hanatarash is Yamaysuka eYe (best known from Boredoms) and Mitsuru Tabata (best known from Zeni Geva). Hanatarash was as much art in sound as it was performance art in destruction.

I admit I did raise some expectations of this being some new drone release as I was listening to the intro, however this punky mix of psych rock, noise rock, bordering on pop at times, is still listenable. Reminiscent of Smile and Pink but with somewhat more detailed songs.

This is volume 1 out of upcoming 4 volumes, which I will probably post too if they turn out to be good.

Karlheinz Stockhausen - Helikopter-Quartett [Arditti String Quartet] (1996) [V0]

Helicopter quartet. A string quartet recorded with each musician in a separate running helicopter mid air, with the noise of the engines and the blades. Not Stockhausen's best but does build up a tension, an anxious atmosphere. Might be a good starting point if you're looking into Stockhausen, it depends on where you're coming from, though I'd anyway recommend Elektronische Musik over this.

The Youtube clip above is from the film about Helikopter Quartett which I can more heartily recommend. I'm considering uploading an encode of it here later. Stay tuned.

8 Eyed Spy - Live (1981) [320]

One of the very few Lydia Lunch-related projects with actually redeemable qualities, none thanks to her however. It is also said that she hated the band while she was in it. A very short lived story, literally, the bassist George Scott III, probably better known for his efforts in James Chance & The Contortions, died of a heroin overdose the same year as they released this live recording on cassette and the band split up.

Karlheinz Stockhausen - Elektronische Musik 1952-60 (1991) [FLAC&v0]

Even if it does feel a bit cliché to post this album I feel a responsibility to do so. Stockhausen was one of the first to create music that can be considered an art of sound. By super-imposing sine waves he managed to construct the sounds themselves from their very basic structure. This is a compilation from some of his work during the years 1952-1960. The somewhat chaotic series of sounds create a rather mellow atmosphere despite their unpredictability and can still be compared to the modern noise music of today. An absolutely must-hear album. Genius or garbage, you decide.

Aluk Todolo - Finsternis (2009) [V2]

Much more obsessive in it's rhythms compared to it's predecessor "Descension" (go to post), keeping the same drum pattern throughout most of the album, making it feel like a ritual that you are taking part in. Starts out with feedbacking dissonant improvisations which almost take on an epic feel at times, works it way to lose form and shape and be crushed by the walls of sound of shrieking amps and distortion pedals by the end of the album.

Neurosis & Jarboe - S/T (2003) [V0]

I just recently saw Neurosis live and it reminded me of this album, and how many Neurosis appreciators are completely ignorant to it's existence. Metalheads who only like Neurosis for their riffs or "brutal" sound will not like this album. People who listen to Neurosis in appreciation for the combination of dissonance and ambient to heavier, crushing even epic sounds, will probably love this album. It revolves around much more synth with drums rather than the guitars, with Jarboe's very dynamic voice giving it a gothic feel. I really can't pidgeonhole this into a genre but it has elements of post-punk, sludge, doom metal or even post-rock.

Robert Fripp, Brian Eno. Two legendary names in development modern avant-garde music. This album has proved to be one of the absolute most influential albums to the development of modern drone and ambient music. It features two tracks, The Heavenly Music Corporation, Swastika Girls and edited versions of those tracks, reversed, half speed etc. This is the 2008 double disc rerelease/remaster featuring even more versions of the tracks on CD2 and has the tracks split up in random parts, I guess the label figured it'd sell more that way. I never really liked Swastika Girls that much but I guess it's a decent loop-experiment for it's time. The Heavenly Music Corporation never seems to fail to take you away though.

Blurt - Bullets For You (1984) [320]

No wave-reminiscent jazz post-punk. Blurt is a must-hear in case anyone missed out on them, quite known for their great lives among other things. This is not their best album, but well worth a listen, being the last album with the original lineup, works good as a starter point.

Gridlock - Formless (2003) [CD&Vinyl-V0]

Probably Gridlock's most sophisticated album, shows a great deal of maturity yet still contains the distinctiveness of their earlier more straight-forward industrial / rhythmic noise material. Perfectly merging harsh abrasive, indeed formless, rhythms with beautiful ambient soundscapes, this being their last album leans more toward IDM. But in a way IDM feels like an insult to such a mature album like this, just glowing of analog warthm, in difference of the digital clones, who just relish on cheap software, and are otherwise found in the genre. Do not let the word IDM scare you off this fantastic record, this is unlike any other IDM.

What I post here is both the 2xvinyl version and the CD version. The CD version was the one I fell in love with. The differences aren't big. The track order is different. Some tracks are about 10-15 seconds longer on the vinyl, and the last ambient outro track is extended by about 5 minutes. The CD version has these interludes which are missing on the vinyls. I don't reckon either one is the "best" so to speak, the vinyl one feels tighter, while the CD has lower bass and clearer high end.

Throbbing Gristle - The Third Mind Movements (2009) [FLAC&V0]

Here's the new Throbbing Gristle if anyone missed it, was exclusively sold at live performances in US, April 2009. The first five minutes I was slightly sceptic, but I'm definitely not disappointed. This feels great after "The Endless Not", which itself wasn't bad, it just didn't feel TG, it felt Coil-ish. TTMM is more subtly powerful, eerie, creepier and probably better, slightly reminiscent of some of their early stuff. I don't think they could ever outshine their earlier years though and I don't think that's what they're trying to accomplish either.

Shameless self-promotion. Instrument Normal is Disexistentsium (me) and Hypochondriosis, and this is our collaboration. We are perhaps most coherently described as noise, with sound manipulation and distortion recurrent through the album, influence from industrial music. Elements of dark ambient can be clearly heard on some tracks. At times with hints of drone doom metal.

AISE is an experiment in extreme expression. Broken undefined soundscapes crafted through destructive processing on sound or body. Self-indulgent with lesser interest in accessibility or existing formulae. An attempt at creation through destruction. Uncompromisable, devoid of hope. Is it music? What is the point of music?

A loud disagreement with "musicality". How could you express anything if you restrict yourself to it? It seems cowardly, or perhaps you're just that uninteresting. I think I've misunderstood what it is to "express your feelings" if it means to play the exact same chords on the guitar the ones that came before played.

More black metal?

Shining is pretty famous, and even though I try to make a point out of not posting albums everyone already heard I decided to post this one. One of Kvarforth's earlier works released when he was only 19~ years old. While he is extremely notorious for his album "V: Halmstad", extremely acclaimed by fans and critics alike, I almost still prefer this one. I don't think everyone has heard this earlier album. It's more black metal ("Halmstad" actually being doom metal rather than black metal) similar to atmospheric black metal and mid-burzum ("Hvis Lyset Tar Oss", "Filosofem" etc.) through almost ritualistic repetetion, highly distorted guitars which almost only become a soundscape while still having legible melodies and riffs. With screams/growls on top. Simple yet effective production. It almost comes off as minimalistic. It definitely has a glow his other albums lack. In the same way it lacks some of what his later albums offer.

Speaking of Kvarforth as a person, I think he is hilarious. Not in the sense that I am laughing at him, rather I am laughing with him at all the little fuckers who take him seriously. He is the greatest troll ever to have existed.

Okay, about time to actually make a post. Even though this album is so recent it feels very nostalgic to me, giving me flashbacks to teen years when I used to be "into" black metal. Today practically all black metal feels outdated, franchised or otherwise ridiculous. The first black metal bands did something interesting for their time but it quickly grew stagnant. For me Vrolok is something like rediscovering black metal all over, how it was supposed to be today, tortured, dark, dirty. Call it depressive black metal or call it industrial black metal or whatever, Vrolok is the epitome of black metal.

Here's a few Mental Destruction uploaded mainly for a friend. They refer to their music as "Orthodox Industrial", their inspiration for lyrics lies in their devotion to Christ. A notable work of theirs which is not posted below is "The Intensity of Darkness" released 1991 on Cold Meat Industry, which my friend already had. It should be available on other blogs if it interests you. With releases dating back to 1990 they were indeed part of the growing early Swedish industrial scene. What is it with christian swedes and death industrial anyway?

"We are finally releasing our long spoken of collaboration between Tokyo’s Koji Tano, AKA M.S.B.R., and Kengo Iuchi. The release features three live duets nested between a solo studio track from each artist.

Tano’s Molten Salt Breeder Reactor opens the disc with the epic Psychic Blue. Excellent harsh noise with strong influences of musique concrète and electro-acoustic. The great production on this 22 minute track makes it so powerful that it is frightening at times.

Kengo Iuchi’s style is the polar opposite to that of M.S.B.R. He describes it as death folk. It incorporates maniacal guitar clanging and insane banter in a style comparable to elements of Keiji Haino or Diamanda Galas in their most demanding moments.

During the collaborative work M.S.B.R. lays low providing spacy electronics with streaks of noise between the insane banter of Kengo Iuchi."

Technically I don't fit into this classification of hipsterfaggot as this band is not foreign to me. Swedish indie band goes experimental, disregards a lot what is typically seen as "musical" and manages to get alienated by large parts of their fanbase. It's hilarious, and this is their by far best album. Experimental pop.

Mars - The Complete Studio Recordings NYC 1977-1978 (2008, flac & mp3)

Back to posting some no wave. Mars is another one of those no wave bands who never actually properly released anything major, in this case just an EP, and we'd need some compilation later on to actually be able to have something to listen to. Even though we love these studio recordings, most no wave bands considered themselves to be live bands, which is possibly why they never really released much studio material, or maybe it's because the capitalist interest in no wave was ZERO, and I guess it's far too late to experience them in their full live glory. This is as close as we get. From parts similar to that of DNA's noise rock to a more purely post-punk sound and even sometimes as far as some weird soundscapes.

So yeah, here I am uploading some Kazumoto Endo. I was talking about him so much in the last post I thought it was the only possible course of action. I haven't seen this around on any blogs so that's why I decided to upload this one which is just an EP. But "While You Were Out" is a fucken great album if you'd like to check it out. Kazumoto's noise is explosive, intense as fuck, destructive, yet in moments somewhat upbeat and cheerful, but in a sick, twisted way.

Shitty 224 kbit/s quality, but I haven't found any better.

Normally I wouldn't post something like this, but Nietzsche makes me look so post-modern and existentialist, fuck yeah. Anything featuring Kazumoto Endo must be worth having too. I thought it was gonna be more noisy though, but this is just tracks of glitch / experimental electronica with only a few noisier parts.

I dislike compilations, I do, some forms of compilations are all right, when it's mostly unreleased material by bands who never really released any albums, like DNA on DNA or a Mars compilation (I will post one later). Worst of all are the "best of" compilations though, it's unbelievable how people buy those.

Anyway this album is from Japan dedicated to Nietszche. Since it's a VA and most of these artists are really obscure, the quality is of course unpredictable, but most of them were at least decent. I was expecting more from the Kazumoto Endo one though.

Anyway, if No Wave really was a genre and not restricted to a certain time, I'd definitely call this this a No Wave band. Since this industrial noisy (post-)punk album was released in 2001 it's not, but it certainly gives you that no wave vibe. Cryptic vocals, abrasive outburst, bizzare & schizophrenic soundscapes, while containing a spirit of post-punk.

DNA - A Taste Of DNA (1980) & DNA on DNA (2004)

DNA is one of the best things ever happen to no wave. This particular EP is incredibly short, just about 10 minutes long, this could make it a lot easier to digest for people to typically acquainted with such dissonant music. Sadly this is the only "real" release by the band. The compilation album released in 2004 "DNA on DNA" is great too, and it actually has this EP on it anyway and it lacks this EP's only weakness, the length. So unless you're a wimp who wants some easy listening, just download the compilation album instead.

Instead of playing their instruments in an traditional manner. They set out to make weird sounds and sounding as different as possible.

Swans' album first album was revolutionary heavy for it's time. At their early years they were called the loudest band on earth. In my opinion this album serves as the best representation of their early aggressive period. It's extremely dirty and sludgy. Sludge fans should hear this out too.

A 2004 documentary about the New York music scene. Especially the short-lived No Wave movement which came into life somewhere along the mid 70s and died in the early-mid 80s. With a comparison to the NY music scene of today (or rather 2002). Which leads to many pretentious rants by the old timers, especially by the oh god so awful Lydia Lunch (also in Teenage Jesus and the Jerks). It's fine though, we still have Michael Gira (Swans) and Arto Lindsay (DNA) to save the film.

Anyone who is acquainted with me has probably heard me mention this album one time or another, a personal favorite of sorts, and as suggested I'm posting it here. It's a very eclectic album ranging from avant-gardian grindy sound collages over a gnarly drum machine to psychedelic noise to long droning ambient tracks. It's a recommendation I almost give to anyone (unless your taste in music is awful). It's a gloomy, malicious, melancholic, chaotic double-disc opus which - if something - would suit as a soundtrack for the decay of mankind.

Works a lot with repetitive sound manipulation and sometimes take on a more chaotic approach. Some songs feature repeated words as sound source, where the mind would start interpreting them and hearing different words or just plainly interpret them as a rhythm and not hearing words at all.

Even though never really particularly distorted, it is very dissonant and makes little musical sense enough for me to actually call it noise.

Ignore the genre he put on it, it's actually Post-Hardcore/Sludge (fuck yeah capitalize genres) something.

Noise is probably the form of music where you'd most definitely want it in FLAC. Where as "normal" music don't use the extreme frequency spectra to an especial degree, which happens to be where mp3 lowers the definition in order to compress, noise most certainly does and intentionally, or perhaps intentionally unintentional as would be the case with these. This is one of my favorites by Incapacitants. An essential album. Sketches toward "pure" noise.

Features like a billion of japanese/east asian samples, I can't udnerstand what's being said, but a Japanese woman once said "vibrator", I could understand that much. The best way to describe it is perhaps to call it "avant-garde jazz", very random, but also stays focused at times, so it's more in doses and processable. Has some mind-exploding noise bursts as well.

A very playful psychedelic, spacey, drone-ambient album, composed mainly of a bunch of manipulated delay, from guitars and whatnots. Though the actual instruments are never really what confronts you about it, they are instead somewhat pushed back to a background. Rarely ventures into more distorted drones, but it's there. In the end not a masterpiece but certainly fun.

Steve Roden - Crop Circles (1997, flac & mp3)

CROP CIRCLES seems at first impression to be very flat just random repetitive crackling. But turn up the volume and eventually what reveals itself is a very opressive and claustrophobic soundscape. Seemingly repetitive but constantly morphing. Made only with a microphone and a speaker. Steve Roden is famous for coining the term "lowercase" to describe his music. Lowercase music is composed of sounds normally inaccessible to the human ear, such as the sound of plants growing or underground ant colony chambers, these are amplified to a hearable level.

Fuck yes, you heard me, another box set. This one is from avant-garde/progressive rock band Henry Cow. The links here are Volume 1 to 9. EXCLUDING volume 10 (a live DVD), the bonus CD as well as the subscriber exclusive 3rd box. Total length is roughly 8 hours and 45 minutes.

I decided to split the downloads to volumes so you don't have to download the whole box if you just want certain volumes, on the other hand this forces you to click more links if you want the whole thing, but whatever, the amount downloaded in bytes remains the same anyway.

Swedish Radio recordings of concerts performed in May 1976 in Gothenburg and May 1977 in Stockholm. Tracks 1-7 and 12-14 were recorded for Tonkraft by Sveriges Radio at a concert in Stockholm on 9 May 1977 and broadcast on 8 June and 11 June 1977; the programme producer was S. Vermalin. Track 8 was recorded for the NDR Jazz Workshop in Hamburg on 26 March 1976. Bohren & Der Club Of Gore - Black Earth (2002)

Extract from a review I wrote on the album ages ago:
"Long droning ambient tones immediately captivate me as I begin to listen. The funeral-paced drums sets the tempo of my breathing. The rhodes piano plays a dark melody for me, an emotional one. Bass tones sounding as if they had traveled from the most unfathomable depths of the abyss has begun to tremble me. The bass is later on played with a bow which creates what can only be described as a fearsome sound. The almost silent buzzy noise created by the brush fondling the snare is tingling my ears. Ah the sax... I don't know how long it's been playing for I have forgotten when it begun. It plays me a lonely tune. Which isn't necessarily grieving the absence of company."

A very melancholic ambient/noir jazz album. A must hear for fans of twin peaks' soundtrack.

Nels Cline - Coward (2009)

Jon Hassell - Maarifa Street: Magic Realism Vol.2 (2005)

Combining electronically manipulated trumpet jazz with an already unique way of playing influenced by world music, Jon Hassell creates a superb atmosphere. His music truly travels in time, in both directions. This is his famous "Fourth World" style. He has also worked with Brian Eno among others.

Zu - Carboniferous (2009)

Somehow I had just missed that Zu had released a new album (or rather it had leaked) until just recently. Perhaps not a brilliant album, it's kind of corny with a mathy sound. Yet I couldn't help finding this to be very catchy while still maintaining an acceptable level of creativity and innovation. Much reminiscent of John Zorn's jazzcore-ish stuff. This album manages to travel from heavy doom metal (almost sludge) to math rock to punk jazz without creating a sense of disorientation. It is certainly not free jazz as some people seem to believe though. Stop distorting your bass and sax, I'm weak for that.

Æthenor - Faking Gold And Murder (2009)

Daniel O'Sullivan, Stephen O'Malley, Vincent de Roguin, David Tibet, Nicolas Field, Alexandre Babel and Alexander Tucker.

The music is largely based around dark ambient soundscapes, freeform percussion and David Tibet's haunting vocals. I must say it exceeded my expectations.
